Joe Popovich is the co-founder and formulator of Tau Tau Skin, a small-batch tallow skincare brand handmade in Arizona. He oversees product formulation, ingredient sourcing, batch testing, and small-batch production from raw materials to final hand-poured tin.

From Military Service to Skincare Formulation

Joe is a former U.S. Marine and presidential helicopter pilot. The precision, discipline, and zero-tolerance-for-shortcuts mindset he developed in service shaped every standard he later brought to Tau Tau Skin. When you've flown a president, "good enough" stops being part of your vocabulary — and that's the standard he applies to every batch he formulates today.

His transition into skincare wasn't a career pivot. It was a personal necessity. In 2023, after his wife Jen failed to find a clean, pregnancy-safe skincare product she trusted, the two of them began formulating their own. The kitchen turned into a workspace. Joe started studying lipid chemistry, sebum mimicry, and small-batch production the same way he'd once studied flight manuals. The first products were for their family. Today, those same formulations are what Tau Tau Skin sells nationwide.

Formulation Philosophy

Joe formulates against one rule: would he use this on his own family every day? If the answer isn't an immediate yes, the ingredient doesn't go in.

The foundation of every Tau Tau Skin formula is grass-fed, grass-finished beef tallow — chosen because its fatty acid profile is nearly identical to human sebum, allowing it to absorb cleanly instead of sitting on the surface. Around that core, he pairs food-grade botanicals selected for specific, evidence-based functions: bakuchiol for natural retinol-like results without the side effects, organic rosehip seed oil for tone and texture, organic pomegranate seed oil for antioxidant defense, organic raw honey for natural humectancy, organic jojoba oil for sebum-mimicking absorption, and organic beeswax for breathable barrier protection.

What Tau Tau Skin formulations explicitly exclude is just as important as what they include: no synthetic preservatives, no formaldehyde-releasing compounds (DMDM Hydantoin, Quaternium-15), no water (which removes the need for harsh preservatives in the first place), no alcohol, no synthetic fragrance, no seed oils, no parabens, no phthalates, and no known endocrine disruptors. Joe maintains an evolving exclusion list that he reviews against new research regularly.

Hand-Made, Small-Batch Production

Every Tau Tau Skin product is hand-made in small batches in Arizona. Joe oversees every batch personally — from sourcing the grass-fed tallow to whipping, testing, and hand-pouring each tin. Nothing leaves the workspace without his sign-off. There is no contract manufacturer. There is no mass-production line. One formulator, one workspace, and a refusal to scale at the cost of quality.
